(Sitting - A Learning Heart Part 1) - Free Indeed - Abundant Living After Abuse




Are you aware that Christ through the leading of the Holy Spirit is working in all our hearts that are open to the call? We can see throughout history that God has been calling humanity to come to Him. There have been a great number who have heard the call but even a greater number who have dismissed the gentle call of our Lord and Savior. The Bible says that For many are called, but few are chosen.” Matthew 22:14

A learning heart just does not stop at just listening to the voice, but there is action to be taken to learn of whom it is that is calling. When the Holy Spirit softens our hearts then our hearts become fertile ground for Jesus to plant the seeds and bear fruit however, too often even within God’s work we don’t sit down enough to take time with Christ and learn of his love. 

For us to learn of his Jesus and his heart, we must take 3 action steps. The first is to sit with Him on a daily basis and asking the Holy Spirit to open your heart for learning. In the Bible there is a story of two sisters Mary and Martha. Mary and Martha were Lazarus’s sisters, the story can be found in Luke. One day Jesus was visiting the village where Mary and Martha lived.

The story goes that Jesus “entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to what he was saying.” Luke 10:38 Mary was sitting at the feet of Jesus and listening to what He was saying which listening is part of learning. Mary was engaged with what Jesus was saying while Martha was busy working doing her chores while the Savior was physically visiting their home.

The story goes on saying that “Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me." (Luke 10:40)

How many times has the Holy Spirit placed in our hearts the desire to fellowship with Christ but because our lives are so busy, our hearts are so bitter and other things are more important that it seems to keep us away from fellowshipping? Martha meant well I am sure, but she was missing the desire or the willingness because she was distracted and even the Lord said to Martha “But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her" (Luke 10:41).

Mary has chosen to sit, listen and learn from the Savior. Mary chose to be rooted in Jesus and we should all be rooted in Jesus and when we do so, we learn to love one another. Paul wrote of being rooted and loving one another in the book of Ephesians I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” Ephesians 3:16-19

Want to heal from your past? You will have the power of the Holy Spirit. It is through the leading of the Holy Spirit we are connected to Christ and overcome. But we must sit, learn and be rooted in the Word. How many times have we sat, listened and learned from our Savior this week? I get that sometimes it is difficult to just sit and learn but, how will we learn about the Holy Spirit, Jesus and our Creator if we go by with what we have learned in church once a week?
